Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

When can I start volunteering?
This is mostly dependant upon how quickly you can have your Application Form and Reference Check Form completed. Once completed, you will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator. When a position becomes available which matches the interests you have identified, you will be contacted for an in-person interview.

How do I obtain an application package?
An Application Form and Reference Check Form can be completed and submitted online. Alternatively, you can download the forms and mail or bring them in to Volunteer Resources. You can also contact Volunteer Resources directly at 416-461-8252, ext. 2076.

How many references do I need?
A minimum of two references is required prior to confirmation of placement. References are accepted from employers, charitable organizations, educational and community sources. Family, friends, doctors and lawyers are NOT eligible. All reference contacts must supply daytime contact numbers or emails. References must be mailed or faxed.

How soon after becoming a volunteer can I receive a Letter of Reference from Bridgepoint Hospital?
Letters of Reference will be issued after successfully completing 60 hours of volunteer service.

I’m a student. Can I do my high school curriculum requirement?
Yes. We encourage students who wish to complete their community service requirement to volunteer at Bridgepoint Hospital during the summer months. We commence summer recruitment in April to fill summer vacancies. Please note we require two to three shifts per week with a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer service.

How many days do I need to volunteer per week? Can I volunteer more than once a week?
You are required to commit to two to four hours a week for a least six months or a minimum of 60 hours. You will be required to volunteer on the same day, at the same time each week as this provides consistency for staff, patients and their families.

Do we need to wear a uniform?
Yes. A $25 deposit is required. A neat appearance and a courteous manner are essential. Photo ID is provided.

How are placement decisions made?
When a vacancy becomes available that corresponds to an area of interest you have identified on your application, you will be invited for an in-person interview to match your needs to the service vacancy needs. Reference checks will be conducted at that time.

Is it possible to volunteer for special events or fundraising efforts only?
We host a series of fundraising and special events throughout the year and volunteers are instrumental in the success of each of them. Please contact the Bridgepoint Health Foundation at foundation@bridgepointhealth.ca or 416-461-8252 ext. 2967 for more information on these volunteer opportunities.

Do we have to pay for parking?
Registered volunteers receive complimentary parking for each of their scheduled shifts.

What if I don’t like the area in which I’ve been placed?
We endeavour to ensure that the volunteer role you take on is one our patients will benefit from – and one you will enjoy. If you are not enjoying your volunteer activity, let us know and we will work with you to attempt to find a more suitable placement.
