Renee Lyons

Bridgepoint Chair in Complex Chronic Disease Research and TD Scientific Director, Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation

Renée Lyons holds the first Bridgepoint Chair in Complex Chronic Disease and the TD Scientific Director of the Collaboratory for Research and Innovation, Bridgepoint Health.  The focus of the Bridgepoint Chair in Complex Chronic Disease (CCD) is the development of a leading-edge research program in CCD and support of its multi-institutional collaborations on research development and use. She is a Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto.  Dr. Lyons is also an adjunct faculty member at Dalhousie University where she held a Tier One Canada Research Chair in Health Promotion and was the Senior Scientist at the  Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre

Dr. Lyons’ research has focused on chronic disease prevention, health systems improvement and knowledge translation. She also spent over 20 years studying social relationships and health problems. As principal investigator, she has received over $25M in health research funding for both research and knowledge translation projects related to rural health, mental health, stroke and health systems reform, public health, oral health of seniors, and chronic disease prevention in midlife and youth, settings and health, and human relationships and chronic illness.

Dr. Lyons received her university education at Dalhousie University (BA in psychology and sociology), Xavier University, Cincinnati (M.Ed in counseling psychology), and the University of Oregon, Eugene (Ph.D. in health studies – coping and adaptation in chronic disease).

Dr. Celeste Alvaro

Celeste Alvaro

Research Scientist
Ph.D.

Celeste Alvaro is a Research Scientist at the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation and Adjunct Professor, Department of Architectural Science, Ryerson University. Celeste is an experimental social psychologist leading the Architectural Design and Health program of research at the Collaboratory.
Her research examines the impact of design innovations on a number of health and functional indicators of complex chronic disease, both before and after the move to the new Bridgepoint Health facility and compares changes with selected hospitals.

Ultimately, this research seeks to establish consistency in methods and measures used to assess the impact of healthcare facility design and identify areas for strategic investments in facility design to improve outcomes.

Dr. Paula Gardner

Paula Gardner

Research Scientist
Ph. D.

Paula Gardner is the lead scientist on the “Moving On – Living Well with Complex Chronic Disease” research team at the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation. Prior to joining Bridgepoint, Paula was a Policy Analyst at the New York Academy of Medicine and Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at the City University of New York. Paula works with global partners on research that explores technologies, programs, and policies that support independent and dignified living for vulnerable populations. Close with impacts & results seeking to achieve for patients & health system through research.

Dr. Kerry Kuluski
Kerry Kuluski

Research Scientist
MSW, Ph.D.

Kerry Kuluski is a Research Scientist with the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation. She holds a Faculty Appointment at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto and is an Instructor in the School of Health Services Management at Ryerson University.

Prior to joining the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation as a Scientist, she completed a Joint Postdoctoral Fellowship at Bridgepoint Health and the University of Oxford with the Health Experiences Research Group. In 2010 she completed her PhD at the University of Toronto in Health Services Research, with a focus on aging and health policy.

Kerry’s program of research at Bridgepoint examines the needs and experiences of individuals with complex chronic disease (i.e., individuals with one or more chronic health problems that become difficult to manage). Some of the challenges faced by this population include the management of multiple co-occurring conditions, functional impairments, depression, anxiety, fluctuating health, and ongoing heavy care needs. Despite generating a significant cost to the health care system, little is known about the experiences and care needs of these patients.

Kerry is working with care managers from across jurisdictions and settings to examine how to tailor care to meet the needs of different types of individuals with complex chronic disease (i.e., young-mid life patients who have had their life interrupted by illness compared to older persons who are experiencing illness as an expected part of the aging process).

 Dr. Michelle Nelson

Michelle Nelson

Research Scientist
Michelle Nelson is currently a Research Scientist in the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation. Her research focuses on issues related to providing health care for complex patients – or those patient populations that present the greatest challenge to health care providers/teams. Prior to joining the Collaboratory, Michelle was the Research Director for a large Interprofessional Education Program, taught as an Instructor at the University of Manitoba and served as a Board Member and Chair of the Research Advisory Committee, for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Through her work at Bridgepoint Dr. Nelson hopes to find ways to help clinical teams work more effectively to meet complex patients’ needs.
