Arranging your placement

For most trainees your educational institution will arrange your placement.  Please use the information below to understand how Bridgepoint works with educational institutions to provide clinical placements for students and post-qualification trainees.

Arranging a clinical elective, rotation, practicum, fellowship or placement

We welcome individual students and groups of learners to our unique, interprofessional, collaborative environment.  We take students from the following professions and from the institutions listed below, with which we have current affiliation agreements.  You should note that individual affiliation agreements may not cover all the programs of study offered by an institution.

Please note also that Bridgepoint can offer placements only to students for whom the placement is part of the curriculum.  Students seeking general hospital experience, whether paid or unpaid, where this is not part of the curriculum, should approach either the Volunteer Office or the Human Resources Office.

You might also find it helpful to know that Bridgepoint does not, in general, provide any funding for students studying on placement.  If your expectation or requirement is for a paid internship/co-op placement or similar we will not be able to assist.

In order to arrange a placement you should ask your institution to contact the IPE Specialist.  Bridgepoint does not accept placement requests direct from students.

If you are studying overseas and hope to have a placement in Canada, at Bridgepoint Hospital, as part of your degree, you should ask your institution to contact one of the affiliated institutions listed lower on this page.  We consider students for placements who are studying overseas where they are put forward via an affiliated institute.  All recent overseas students have joined us via the University of Toronto.

Observerships and shadowing experiences

We receive many requests from individuals wishing to learn, shadow, observe or gain experience in a clinical setting. If your interest is in gathering information for a project, research activity or seeking exposure prior to entering a training program you  yourself must find a consenting clinician.  The Academic Office is not able to assist you in finding a supervisor or organising these kinds of experiences.

If a suitable supervisor does agree to accept you for shadowing/observation then, at that point, you must contact the Academic Office.  We will provide you and your supervisor with the appropriate forms to complete and return for approval.   You should allow at least two weeks for the complete application to be processed.

Medical trainees should review the section below.

If you are a practising clinician and wish to gain professional exposure at Bridgepoint for the purposes of enhancing care in your own practice environment or to assist us in enhancing the care of our patients you may qualify for a Clinical Observership.  Please contact the IPE Specialist in the first instance.

Medical Trainees

Bridgepoint welcomes medical students, residents and Fellows from Canada, the US and countries beyond.  All medical trainees are required to register with the University of Toronto and follow that institution's processes in applying for undergraduate or postgraduate elective or selective rotations at Bridgepoint.

Bridgepoint has a number of rehabilitation and complex continuing care electives in the UofT undergraduate electives catalogue.  All elective areas are available to both undergraduates and postgraduates and we welcome Fellows in any area. Please note that the UofT catalogue may not be completely up to date.  Please click this link to open a local list of elective opportunities available at Bridgepoint.

For non-UofT students please consult the appropriate website:

Trainees with an interest in taking an elective at Bridgepoint should contact the Academic Office to enquire whether the supervisor is available for the dates they have in mind.   Elective length is flexible depending on student and supervisor availability.  The elective Managing chronic disease interprofessionally and across the continuum: a hospitalist and rehabilitation perspective is frequently supervised by a pair of hospitalist physicians and has a strong interprofessional component.  You may express a preference for a Unit or Units to be placed on, depending on your interests.  Once dates have been agreed student must book their Elective through the appropriate elective system.

Trainees interested in other areas for a rotation should contact Katherine or their intended supervisor to enquire about availability.

Current medical trainees from any institution wishing to observe in the hospital should contact a potential supervisor.  If the supervisor is willing to act then the Academic Office will send the trainee an application form for completion and return.  Always allow at least two weeks to arrange an observation opportunity.

University of Toronto medical undergraduates seeking an Enriching Educational Experience (EEE) placement should contact their prospective supervisor direct.  Once the supervisor has agreed to the EEE placement the student should contact the Academic Office to obtain the Registration Form.

All undergraduates and postgraduates should note that, if their elective is four weeks or longer they may have an opportunity to participate in a structured IPE placement.  See here for further details.  If you are interested in participating please contact Katherine Brown to check if a place is available prior to signing up for the elective.  Or do call 416-461-8252 x2924.
