Augmentative Communication and Writing Clinic (ACWC)

Bridgepoint’s innovative Augmentative Communication and Writing Clinic (ACWC) is focused on addressing the communication needs of individuals with severe speech and/or physical impairments through the provision and support of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). AAC is a term used to describe additional ways of helping people who find it hard to communicate through speech or in writing. AAC includes gestures, strategies, materials, or technology to help people to communicate more easily.

Following assessment, a recommendation for an appropriate face-to-face and/or written communication system is made, taking into account the individual’s needs, environment, and communication partners.

The ACWC is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, including a Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Communicative Disorders Assistant, and Technologist. The ACWC has been designated an Expanded Level Augmentative and Alternative Communication Clinic by the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. “Expanded Level” status is designated by the ADP to clinics that are able to demonstrate that they have the staff, knowledge, support and equipment to meet the needs of a wide range of complex patients. The “Expanded Level” designation allows the clinic to prescribe all devices that are funded through the Assistive Devices Program.
