Redefining What a Hospital Can Be

Bridgepoint Health is Canada's leader in the prevention and management of complex chronic disease and disability. It is the largest health care facility of its kind in Canada and the only organization that is dedicated to changing the world for people living with complex chronic disease and disability. Affiliated with the University of Toronto, Bridgepoint Health is restoring lives through innovations in patient care, research and teaching.

Today, people with two or more chronic conditions have complex chronic disease, or multiple lifelong illnesses, which has become the biggest challenge to the sustainability of our health care system. One in five Canadian adults lives with complex chronic disease and 70% of Canadians over the age of 45 are directly affected.

Bridgepoint Health has a rich, 150-year history and is a significant landmark within Toronto's Riverdale community. Its role has evolved considerably over time, and Bridgepoint is embarking on the next phase in its evolution. An ambitious and comprehensive redevelopment of its facilities and its site will see the corner of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East completely revitalized!

The Community Master Plan, approved by the City of Toronto in 2006, is based on a unique 'campus of care', which reflects exciting concepts from architecture, landscaping, and medical best practices to not just transform the site, but to change the world for people living with complex chronic disease. The new, state-of-the-art facility will be a national centre of excellence to foster the next generation of clinicians, researchers and educators who will work together to advance our understanding and treatment of complex chronic disease.

Bridgepoint Health and Infrastructure Ontario have partnered with Plenary Health to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility for 30 years after completion. Construction will start in the fall of 2009, and is expected to be finished in early 2013. Patient services will move to the new hospital in the spring of 2013.
