The Historic Don Jail Wing

The main entrance of the historic Don Jail building will be publicly accessible. The Rotunda will serve as an important focal point for hospital events, lectures and use by community groups. This building, once a place of incarceration, will become a leading centre of innovation providing space for research and education.

The new hospital and historic Don Jail buildings are connected by an elevated glazed bridge, under which is a pedestrian connection.

The addition behind the historic wing is a future phase for health-related uses. The human remains discovered in that location are proposed to be removed.

The historic Don Jail is adapted and integrated into the function of the hospital. It will be home to the hospital’s administration.   The bridge sits back from the face of the wing of the Jail, enhancing the legibility of the Jail. This transparent linking element is much lighter and more respectful of the heritage building than anticipated in the Guidelines (5.2.3).

The main entrance of the Jail leads to the Rotunda and entry court beyond (6.2.4). The Rotunda will be an important focal point for community uses, hospital events, public heath-related announcements and lectures (5.2.4).

The main entrance and Rotunda will be publicly accessible during regular business hours.
A collection of cells will be retained in the basement for historic interpretation.
